New York City, East 53rd street. I lived for over 3 years one block from these buildings and was always drawn to the architecture and city life. Capturing this image proved challenging as I stood just across the narrow street and took several shots to composite the image. Photoshop was needed to compile and take out the distortion. My goal is to return and capture the entire side of this street, but this time with a tilt-shift lens. … [Read more...]
Castle Hill Lighthouse
On a cold New England evening, I wanted to take a photo of the Castle Hill Lighthouse in Newport, RI. Okay, this image has been captured by many photographers, but I still wanted my shot. I set up on the snow-covered rocks with my tripod precariously close to the rock edge to get the best angle and being careful not to loose my equipment into the water below. As the sun set and the lights on the Newport Bridge came on, I took the shot. Then, It was time for hot chocolate! … [Read more...]
Stonehenge
We were extremely fortunate to book a reservation to visit Stonehenge at sunset and go inside the ring. This is off-limits to the general public except for limited group access with advanced reservations. Using my tripod and waiting for the precise moment, I captured the sunset between the stones. … [Read more...]
Cliffs of Moher
During the summer of 2014, my wife and I visited southern Ireland. We rented a car, driving on the "opposite side", and visited as many spots as our remaining vacation time would permit. On a typical west coast rainy day, we visited the Cliffs of Moher. I patiently waited for the rain to subside and the sky to brighten to finally get this shot. … [Read more...]
The Louvre at Midnight
One could spend weeks exploring The Louvre Museum. Unfortunately, on vacation, we could only spend one day with a personal guide. Spectacular! My website has several shots of the Louvre and my favorite is this, taken during a three hour midnight photo expedition around Paris. I highly recommend night photography this way, especially when traveling and not too keen on using public transportation with expensive equipment. And yes, we thought about the da Vinci Code when we saw the pyramid! … [Read more...]
Brooklyn Bridge Oasis
While working in NYC, one evening I went over to Brooklyn to photograph the iconic Brooklyn Bridge. At first, I was disappointed a restoration was underway and part of the bridge was concealed in tarps. However, this proved to be a bonus as the textured canvas added to the scene. Many have photographed this bridge but I have not seen one that included the oasis-like restaurant beneath the structure. It reminded me of a Thomas Kinkade painting. The restaurant is the River Café. In October 2012, Hurricane Sandy caused extensive damage to The River Café, but after 15 months and millions of dollars repairing the damage caused by the four feet of water that flooded the restaurant, it has now reopened. … [Read more...]
British Horse Guard
The British Horse Guards were a must-see when we were in London. I captured this shot when the backdoor of the Horse Guard stall was shut creating the black background I wanted. I used Photoshop to create the final effect. The Blues and Royals (Royal Horse Guards and 1st Dragoons) (RHG/D) is a cavalry regiment of the British Army, part of the Household Cavalry. The Colonel-in-Chief is Queen Elizabeth II and the Colonel of the Regiment is Anne, Princess Royal. It is the second most senior regiment in the British Army. … [Read more...]
Nantucket Lighthouse
When my wife and I visited Nantucket in 2013, I had the naive expectations of a rural rustic town which preserved its legacy of the days of whale hunting off the New England coast (Ok, I am not a supporter of this, but unfortunately it is our history). Upon arrival, we discovered that its whaling history, though available at the many novelty and clothing shops, was concentrated at its small whaling museum. Being first time tourists, we decided to take the bus tour of the island which took about one hour. Stopping only once, we were permitted to photograph the Sankaty Head Light, being fortunate to have an approaching storm in the background, which added some drama to the photograph. … [Read more...]
New York Midtown
On the 4th of July, I had the fortunate privilege to set up on the roof of the United Nations Building on the east side of mid-town Manhattan. At the time, I was working on the restoration of this complex and my security badge allowed me this unrestricted access. I took many photographs, as the sun set, attempting to capture the urban landscape beauty of one of the largest cities in the world. Within an hour of taking this photo, I was able to capture the fireworks, which were launched on other side of the island from the Hudson River. You can see my choice shot of this annual event in the Images within the New York section. … [Read more...]
